The term "yard waste" includes GRASS, BRUSH, BRANCHES (under 4' long or 4" in diameter) and LEAVES.
The term "yard waste" does not include DIRT, ROCKS and VERY LARGE (over 4' long or 4" in diameter) BRANCHES
Yard waste is collected at the curbside one time per week from April 1 until October 31. The day your yard waste is collected is determined as follows:
Zones 1 and 3 are collected on Tuesday (place at the curbside Monday evening)
Zones 2 and 4 are collected on Wednesday (place at the curbside Tuesday evening)
An easy way to determine your yard waste pickup day is as follows:
If your GARBAGE is picked up on Tuesday or Wednesday, your yard waste is picked up on TUESDAY.
If your GARBAGE is picked up on Thursday or Friday, your yard waste is picked up on WEDNESDAY.
Yard waste may be put to the curbside in paper, NOT plastic bags. Yard waste may also be put to the curbside in trash barrels not exceeding 32 gallons in size. LARGE GREEN LANDSCAPER BARRELS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. Yard waste put to the curbside in landscaper barrels or plastic bags will NOT BE PICKED UP. Branches and brush must be cut to lengths of no more than 4' then tied and bundled in bundles weighing less than 50 pounds if no bag or barrel is used.
Yard waste, EXCLUDING GRASS may be brought to the Hawthorne Recycling Center (Ryerson Way off Wagaraw Road at the baseball fields) during regular hours of operation, however, GRASS CLIPPINGS ARE NOT ACCEPTED AT THE RECYCLING CENTER AT ANY TIME.
Beginning Saturday, October 15, and continuing through the month of November, residents (with proof of residency) will be given 15 free leaf bags from the Recycling Center. Additional bags can be purchased at the Recycling Center throughout the year at 3 bags per $1.
Bagged leaves (as well as leaves in barrels) at the curb will be collected on your "Yard Waste" day during the months of November and December. Leaf pick-up continues on the same once a week schedule as yard waste, Bagging leaves in paper biodegradable bags is preferable, as this prevents leaves from blowing back onto your property or your neighbor's property before they are collected.
Leaves will be collected in the street as per the Borough Leaf Schedule during the months of November and December. Please refer to the schedule that will be mailed to you and which will be published in the local newspaper on October 13th.
Drop-off at the Recycling Center
Leaves may also be brought to the Hawthorne Recycling Center (Ryerson Way off Wagaraw Road at the baseball fields) anytime throughout the year during regular hours of operation. No grass can be brought to the Recycling Center.
Compost material is generated by yard waste that is collected at the Hawthorne Recycling Center. Yard waste includes brush, branches, and leaves. Compost material is available to the public to pick up from the recycling center (at no charge) and use in their own yards.
