The Borough's fire protection is provided by the five companies in the all-volunteer Hawthorne Fire Department. The members elect their own Chief and other officers. The Chief reports to the Mayor.
A Board of Fire Commissioners consisting of the Fire Chief and the Assistant Chiefs from the various companies is empowered to adopt by laws for control, government and management of the department. The Board meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM at the Louis Bay 2nd Library.
New Volunteer members are always welcome. Contact the Chief for more details.
BUREAU OF FIRE PREVENTION The Bureau is responsible for enforcing the state of New Jersey's Uniform Fire Safety Act within the Borough. The Fire Official also serves as the Borough's Housing Officer, enforcing the New Jersey Housing Code.
Whenever a dwelling unit has a change in tenants, the property owner is required to obtain a Certificate of Smoke Detector, Carbon Monoxide and Fire Extinguisher Compliance.
Illegal Apartments: The Borough is aggressively enforcing rules against the creation of illegal dwelling units such as basement apartments, attic apartments, unlicensed rooming houses or subdividing homes without permits. These situations create safety hazards and adversely affect the quality of life in our neighborhoods. Please call if you see evidence of illegal occupancy.
