The Hawthorne Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) was started in 2002 as part of a statewide mandate requiring all police departments to establish a domestic violence crisis team. Hawthorne's DVRT works in conjunction with the Borough and the Police Department, and is in partnership with the Passaic County Women's Center. The Police Department has a Domestic Violence Officer and liaison (Lt. John Carbone) assigned to the Team.
Victims of domestic violence will be given immediate support at the moment of crisis and receive all available information regarding the law, safety options, and available resources.
DVRT members are volunteer from, our community, local business and the surrounding area. Each member is required to complete a forty (40) hour training course provided by the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office, the Passaic County Women's Center, and the Hawthorne Police Department. During this training, the crisis team members learn methods for dealing with domestic violence issues, and neglect and abuse of the elderly and disabled These members have an office located within the Police Department, and have many resources available to help victims.
Anyone interested in more information about domestic violence or in joining the Domestic Violence Response Team should contact DVRT at (973) 636-2085 (leave a message) or contact Lt. Carbone at (973) 427-1800. Remember, if it's an emergency, call 911.
