Hawthorne’s first mayor under the council form of government was Sylvester Utter who was inaugurated on April 18, 1898. The commission form of government was voted upon by the townspeople in July of 1911 and Reuben MacFarlan filled the position of mayor under the new form of government.
In 120 years of history, the borough has had only 16 mayors, with Mayor Louis Bay, 2nd, holding that office for 40 years spanning 1947 to 1987.
